The 2013 Volvo S60 T5 AWD is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged I5 producing 250 hp. |
I thoroughly enjoyed our long-term Volvo S60
R-Design sedan last year, but I always thought that car was rather
overpriced for its size and capabilities, coming in around $45,000. This
T5 version, on the other hand, strikes me as a relative value in sports sedans with a sticker right at $38k.
No,
it doesn't have the silky turbo six that the T6 model enjoys, but I
never felt the five-pot lacked power to move this midsized sedan along
with verve. I don't know that one cylinder can make much difference, but
this car felt nimbler as well.
We packed the whole family in the
S60 T5 and ran errands around town all afternoon. The first thing to
note is that the S60 is not a big car. A Volkswagen Passat or Ford Fusion
would be far better transportation for larger folks, but since my brood
is still of the under-10 ilk, we remained relatively comfortable
throughout.
The cozy cabin is well laid-out, but our tester lacked a rearview camera or park assist system, disappointing since Volvo's
“safety first” mantra should dictate such things as standard,
particularly at $38k. I also think Volvo's standard 17-inch wheels look
too small on the S60's otherwise attractive profile.

There's still
a lot to like here. If you're getting sticker shock from BMW 3-series
shopping, Volvo has a compelling alternative you won't see at every
stoplight.
NEWS EDITOR GREG MIGLIORE: The cabin is
my favorite part of the 2013 Volvo S60 T5. It makes this sedan worth
checking out and seriously comparing with other luxury cars, because
this setting is significantly nicer than many of the entries from
Germany, Japan and America. The S60 is well laid-out. Everything is
within easy reach. It looks gorgeous. The butterscotch seats, black trim
and proper use of plastics make this a pleasing, relaxing place to
spend time.
There is not much wind noise, the seats offer an
excellent driving position and you feel close to the road without being
punished like in a sports car. Add in little touches, like the clear
shifter, and this setting draws you in and makes you not want to leave.
The
chassis is comfortable, and the steering has an appropriate weight. The
brakes return smart bite with just a bit of travel. The T5 is fine. Our
former long-termer with the turbo inline six-cylinder (325 hp) was
quick, but this unit is excellent, too, and more than adequate for most
settings. With a relatively low curb weight, even with all-wheel drive,
peak torque at just 1,800 rpm and a smartly calibrated six-speed
transmission, most will not miss the extra horsepower. The exterior
design is simple, a little plain, though the wheels are classy and
athletic. If you want crazy styling, look elsewhere.

The feel from
the driver's seat is what really sells this S60. It tells you all you
need to know: there's comfort, class and a decent amount of power. Volvo
does a nice job of keeping important things simple and executing them
well.
